The Harris Civil Programs business provides precise, highly reliable, high-speed communications and information networks that improve productivity and information processing for federal agencies of the U.S. government including the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Census Bureau, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Homeland Security, and the Government Printing Office.
For the FAA, one of the company's largest customers, Harris supplies Weather and Advanced Radar Processing Systems as well as a Voice Switching and Control System that provides air traffic controllers critical communications links with pilots as well as other air traffic controllers. The company's largest single program is called the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure program (FTI). FTI is a modern, secure, and efficient network that is providing voice, data and radar communications to 50,000 FAA employees at more than 4,000 sites across the nation. The program will save the FAA and the American public hundreds of millions of dollars in operational costs over the 15-year life of the program.
Harris designed and deployed the new network and is providing on-going mission operations and support services. It's a great example of Harris Corporation's ability to implement and manage large, complex programs that integrate secure, advanced communications and information processing technologies at significant costs savings.
Another big customer for Harris is the U.S. Census Bureau. Harris has modernized two key census databases containing 175 million addresses for all U.S. businesses and residences, and a database that links U.S. streets, rivers, railroads and other geographic features to GPS coordinates. Harris is currently developing a wireless PDA that will put the latest secure wireless and GPS technologies into the hands of 500,000 census takers supporting the 2010 census. The PDA will allow census takers to input data in real time and securely transmit the information back to the Census Bureau, creating more accurate census collection and saving a great deal of time and money.
