Volunteers from Harris Corporation, the Orlando Magic, and Diamond Community School in Palm Bay, Florida, are bringing the first KaBOOM! playground to Brevard County. KaBOOM! is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to giving every child in America a great place to play within walking distance.
Diamond Community School provides educational services for children in grades K-12, with a special interest in children who are at risk for school failure due to learning disabilities, academic delays and socio-economic challenges. Previously, the children who attended Diamond Community School had old equipment dating back to 1995, when the school first opened.
Design Day: Planning for the playground began at a Design Day event in September, when local children and community leaders met with Harris Corporation, the Orlando Magic and organizers from KaBOOM! to design their dream playground. The children's drawings were then used to create the final playground design.
Build Day: The playground was built on November 19 in less than 6 hours by 250 volunteers from Harris Corporation, the Orlando Magic and Diamond Community School, under the guidance on non-profit KaBOOM! The equipment is all-inclusive for children, regardless of their physical abilities.
Dedication Day: The ribbon-cutting and grand opening celebration took place Monday, November 29. Representatives of Harris, the Orlando Magic, Diamond Community School and KaBOOM! were on hand, and the children had the chance to visit with Orlando Magic player Mickael Pietrus, Magic Community Ambassador Bo Outlaw and the Magic Dancers.
