WEEE Directive Information

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/ED) is a European Union Directive that requires producers of Electronic and Electrical Equipment to provide recycling for their products at the end of their life. Some key responsibilities of the producer include:

  • Designing products that are easily recyclable by making them easy to disassemble

  • Placing a label on products that includes (1) the crossed-out wheelie bin indicating the product must be recyled, (2) identification of the manufacturer, and (3) the date (8-13-2005 or later) the product was introduced into the EU

  • Building programs so that manufacturers can manage the recycling of each product at the end of its life, including:
    • Instructions directing customers to the recyclers in each EU country to be used for your products

    • Information to customers and recyclers on the location and identification of all the polluting materials in each specific equipment

      • Polluting materials include any material within your product which is considered hazardous or is otherwise restricted when disposed as a waste material

      • The JIG-101 list includes most currently known materials identified as polluting materials

      • Suppliers should implement programs to stay abreast of regulatory requirements for disposal of materials used in their products
