Belo Selects Harris Corporation to Complete Transition to DTV

CINCINNATI, November 2, 2000 - Acting to ensure that each of its U.S. television stations meets the Federal Communications Commission's Digital Television (DTV) implementation schedule, Belo Corporation has awarded Harris Corporation a contract to provide digital television equipment and installation services for its stations that have not yet initiated digital service. Belo, one of the United States' largest media companies, has ordered Harris transmission, encoding, and monitoring equipment and installation services.

Of the 19 Belo stations that have recently ordered DTV equipment from Harris, 80% will have received their equipment by March 2001, with the remaining accepting shipment no later than September 2001, all well in advance of the May 1, 2002 FCC mandate. Harris equipment will be delivered and installed at the following Belo stations: KONG-TV, Seattle, Washington; KTVK-TV and KASW-TV, Phoenix, Arizona; KENS-TV, San Antonio, Texas; WWL-TV, New Orleans, Louisiana; WHAS-TV, Louisville, Kentucky; KVUE-TV, Austin, Texas; KREM-TV and KSKN-TV, Spokane, Washington; KMSB-TV and KTTU-TV, Tucson, Arizona; and KTVB-TV, Boise, Idaho.

Belo has previously installed Harris DTV equipment at seven of its stations in the top 45 U.S. television markets including: WFAA-TV, Dallas, Texas; KHOU-TV, Houston, Texas; KING-TV, Seattle, Washington; KMOV-TV, St. Louis, Missouri; KGW-TV, Portland, Oregon; WCNC-TV, Charlotte, North Carolina and WVEC-TV, Norfolk, Virginia.

"It is clear that Belo recognizes the urgency of acting now to ensure that every one of its stations meets the May 1, 2002 DTV on-air date mandated by the FCC for U.S. commercial stations," said Bruce Allan, president and general manger of Harris' Broadcast Communications Division. "Like a growing number of broadcast leaders, Belo understands that there is more at stake than ordering long lead-time transmission equipment before the DTV groundswell. Stations also need to ensure that qualified installation teams areavailable to provide on-site support once the equipment arrives - and there is a limited number of these teams."

Belo's Vice President of Engineering, Bob Turner, added, "For years, Harris has been the benchmark for dependable, broadcast-quality transmitters. Harris was there at the beginning of digital television, and they continue that lead with their exceptional digital equipment."

The Belo stations will be installing Harris solid-state VHF Platinum®CD, UHF DiamondCD™ and Sigma™CD IOT transmitters with second-generation, ATSC 8-VSB exciters. Belo also chose a complete line of Harris FlexiCoder™ ATSC MPEG-2 encoding systems with MASTERplus™ integrated master control, PSIPplus™ PSIP generators, and MONITORplus™ transmission monitoring systems for its broadcast studios and transmission sites. Harris has delivered DTV transmitters to more than two-thirds of all U.S. television stations that are offering digital service, and MPEG-2 encoding systems to nearly three-quarters of all stations offering locally-encoded programs, including stations in the U.S., Argentina, Korea, Taiwan and Mexico. Harris also has delivered MASTERplus integrated master control systems to approximately half of the DTV market.

Belo is one of the nation's largest media companies with a diversified group of television broadcasting, newspaper publishing, cable news and electronic media assets. The company's Television Group consists of 18 stations reaching 14 percent of U.S. television households. Belo owns six stations in four of the top 17 television markets: WFAA-TV (ABC), Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas; KHOU-TV (CBS), Houston, Texas; KING-TV (NBC) and KONG-TV (IND), Seattle/Tacoma, Washington; and KTVK-TV (IND) and KASW-TV (WB) in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, Belo owns six local or regional cable news channels and manages three television stations through local marketing agreements.
