Harris Corporation Wins New Telet Contract
SÃO PAULO, Brazil/Redwood Shores, CA, June 14th, 1999Harris Corporation, a world leader in the private digital microwave radio equipment and services market, today announced the signing of its second contract with Telet, a Brazilian mobile telecommunications operator, for the supply and installation of Harris microwave radios throughout the southern region of Brazil. Telets recent order brings the total value of Harris contracts with the company to USD$15 million. The new contract covers the expansion of Telets cellular network in the western region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and includes the supply and installation of additional Harris digital microwave radios. The first contract, completed when Telet started commercial operations in February 1999, delivered Harris microwave radios to provide access between cellular sites. At present Telet covers more than 80 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul - Porto Alegre, Caxias do Sul, Pelotas, Santa Maria, among others. Today more than 5 million people are able to use the services of Telet, "Claro Digital" and "Claro Expresso" (pre-paid). "The excellent work produced by Harris during the first contract led Telet to choose the company once more to supply equipment for the new expansion phase in the coverage of the Claro Digital and Claro Expresso services" said Richard Beneteau,Director of Operations of the Telet Network. "Telet has brought many innovations to Rio Grande do Sul, including the possibility of using mobile phones on the main highways of the state", he added. Telet selected radios from the Harris low- to mid-capacity MicroStar® family because of Harris ability to provide rapid, cost-effective, reliable, and expandable site interconnection for the buildout of the companys network. The radios included in the contract are produced locally at Harris Alphaville plant located on the outskirts of São Paulo. Installation will be completed by the end of the year.
