Harris Corporation's Highest Technology Honor Goes to Robert F. Varley, Harris Fellow for 2004
MELBOURNE, Florida, February 24, 2004 – Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has awarded the company's prestigious Fellow Award to Robert F. Varley, a senior systems engineer with Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD) in Palm Bay, Florida. Mr. Varley has been the chief architect of many advanced communications systems for Harris' proprietary and commercial customers, and has been instrumental in the capture and successful execution of several significant programs for the division. In addition to naming the 2004 Harris Fellow and as part of its National Engineers Week activities, February 22 - 28, Harris is recognizing more than 60 employees from its five divisions with awards for industry recognition, division cooperation, product and process innovation, publication in technical journals, presentations, and chairing at conferences. "Bob Varley's extensive contributions to the development of Harris Corporation's antenna tracking systems and products have helped Harris to distinguish itself as a leading provider of SATCOM and other communications systems to our government and commercial customers," said Howard L. Lance, Harris chairman and CEO. Selection criteria for the Fellow Award include significant contributions to the state-of-the-art in the industry; recognition among industry peers; a demonstration of technical depth, breadth, and leadership; mentoring of others in the company and continuous contributions of importance to Harris' business. "Bob Varley was selected to receive the 2004 Harris Fellow Award from among many gifted Harris engineers for his unique combination of expertise in RF, antennas, and mechatronics—a synergistic blend of mechanisms, controls, electronics and software," said Dr. Kwame Boakye, Harris vice president and chief technology officer. "He has applied these technologies to the development of navigation and mechanism control algorithms, communication links, and payload delivery capabilities for remotely deployed and controlled electromechanical systems and sensors. His efforts have helped GCSD to the win and execute programs valued at over $200 million in sales over the last several years. He has helped to position Harris to receive on-going orders from several customers with values exceeding $30 million annually. He is recognized by his peers and customers as an expert who can provide solutions to some of their most technically challenging problems. The leadership he has shown in the facilitation of technology transfers within and outside of the company, government-funded research and development, product development and business growth across GCSD has contributed immeasurably to the division's and the company's success." Mr. Varley joined Harris in 1970 as an electrical engineer at the Printing Equipment Research Center. He received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineer from the University of Michigan and Cleveland State University respectively. Bob is a registered professional engineer.
