Rural Cellular Corporation Awards Harris $8 Million Digital Microwave Radio Network Contract

May 30, 1995
MELBOURNE, FL/ALEXANDRIA, MN - Harris Corporation has been awarded a contract valued at more than $8 million by Rural Cellular Corporation (RCC) to provide one of the largest digital microwave radio communication systems in Minnesota.

Harris' Farinon Division, San Carlos, California, was awarded the multi-year contract to engineer, design and install the new system, which will replace the leased-line facilities currently used by RCC.

The microwave system for RCC will provide state-of-the-art digital technology throughout the company's network and will readily support the transmission of voice, data and video in a wireless environment. Both synchronous and asynchronous signals will be transported over the system using Farinon's new MegaStar 2000 SONET digital microwave radio. The MegaStar 2000 enables the seamless mix of radio and fiber optics and provides RCC and its customers with a highly reliable network.

RCC, parent company of Cellular 2000 and KEYPAGE , uses leased facilities to interconnect cell sites of the cellular and paging subsidiaries network. According to RCC Engineer John Favretto,"The microwave network will enable RCC to provide a more reliable, and more cost-effective means of interconnection to our Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO)." Cellular 2000 and KEYPAGE customers will receive the ultimate benefit from this re-engineering.

"RCC's decision to replace its existing network of leased facilities could represent a major trend in cellular operations," says Denis Côté, vice president of worldwide marketing and sales for Farinon. "Cellular operators are looking for ways to reduce costs and improve service, and microwave radio is one of the better solutions in accomplishing those objectives."

Harris Farinon, headquartered in San Carlos, California, is a leading manufacturer of microwave radios and systems. The division is a unit of Harris Corporation's Communications Sector and has manufacturing operations in San Antonio, Texas; Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec; and Shenzhen, People's Republic of China.

Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3.3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, semiconductors, communications, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment. # # #
