Harris Corporation to Establish Manufacturing Facility for South American Communications Market
At a ceremony in Sao Paulo, Harris announced that beginning later this year, the São Paulo-based plant will supply Brazil with Harris' complete MicroStar® product line, which provides low- to medium-capacity wireless solutions for a variety of applications. The new manufacturing operation will offer a variety of turnkey services to Brazilian and Latin American customers. System engineering, transmission engineering, project management, project engineering and installation, system integration, and acceptance testing capabilities will all be available. The plant also will provide a complete customer service center with 24-hour customer support, a spare parts depot, equipment repair capabilities and equipment training facilities.
In addition, Harris do Brasil, headquarters of Farinon Division's Brazil operations, will offer potential telecommunications customers and employees seminars and training programs in wireless network development.
At the ceremony, Ricardo Diaz, vice president and general manager of Harris Corporations Farinon Division, discussed Harris' efforts to develop shared technologies and facilities with Brazilian partners as part of the division's international growth strategy. "Our expanding Brazilian operation is the result of years of work and planning," he said. "We are committed to developing solid relationships with our Brazilian partners and hiring local staff to help us contribute to the success of Brazil's flourishing telecommunications market." By 1999 the Brazilian plant is expected to not only supply local demand but also to export microwave radios and systems internationally.
The announcement follows a series of recent Harris contract wins throughout Latin America. The latest contract signed was with BCP SA and BSE SA, companies led by BellSouth and the Brazil-based Safra Group.
Harris do Brasil Director Martín de la Serna explained Farinon Divison's growth plans. "The Brazilian telecommunications industry is rapidly expanding, and our presence in São Paulo will strengthen our ability to offer the market the advantages of increased reliability, flexibility and cost-effectiveness of Harris microwave-systems," he said. "Brazilian telecommunications customers need high-quality, rapidly deployable microwave technologies to build wireless networks, and our products meet those criteria better than any others on the market.
"We also are anticipating additional new business opportunities that will result from Mercosur which is facilitating rapid growth of the Latin American cellular industry," he added. Mercosur (South American Common Market) was created in 1994 to encourage trade and partnerships among its members.
Harris Farinon Division delivers wireless service providers, power utilities and transportation companies, pipeline and petroleum industries, and state, local and federal agencies a full range of microwave radio equipment that operates in frequency bands from 2 GHz to 38 GHz. The division is the largest supplier of analog and digital microwave systems in North America and has a customer base in more than 140 countries worldwide.
