High Tech Expansion to Create Jobs at San Antonio, Texas Operation
Harris currently owns a 50,000 square foot facility located in University Park at the south west corner of IH 10 and DeZavala. Construction of the new facility will be adjacent to the existing facility and will begin as early as June and occupancy is expected within 12 months.
If international market growth forecasts are realized, there is the potential to create more than 300 new jobs over the next decade with an annual compensation of up to $11 million. This would be in addition to the 356 full time jobs already provided by the San Antonio Operation. Permanent employees with Harris Corporation's divisions are entitled to a benefits package that effectively increases the total compensation by over 40 percent. The benefits include: family healthcare and life insurance, disability insurance, a 401K plan with matching company contributions and profit sharing, paid vacations and holidays, reimbursement accounts for healthcare and dependent care, and educational assistance.
The jobs span electronic assembly and testing, systems integration of completed microwave radio units, shipping and distribution plus a limited number of managerial, technical and administrative support positions. Completed products as well as sub-assemblies are distributed to worldwide customers.
The completed expansion is estimated to cost over $10 million, in addition to the cost of the land. Issues considered in selecting the San Antonio site for the expansion included the availability of a suitable transportation infrastructure, appropriate land to support construction of the facility, a skilled labor pool, and a favorable local tax structure. "This expansion is a significant investment to meet the needs of the company's expanded global markets," commented Doug Carlberg, Harris' Vice President of Operations. "More than that, it represents a solid commitment to the community and to our future."
