Highlights:

  • Antenna upgrades allow direct data access to GOES-16 images
  • Marks first Environment Canada location to access data
  • Harris IntelliEarth™ WxConnect™ enables fastest access to large increases in satellite data

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) technology is helping Environment Canada to access data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) GOES-16 weather satellite, improving forecasting timeliness and accuracy.

Harris completed antenna upgrades through its IntelliEarth™ WxConnect™ family of systems and services, providing Environment Canada direct access to the GOES Rebroadcast system that relays satellite data to users. Direct access improves forecasting timeliness and accuracy, leveraging GOES-16’s ability to deliver data as fast as every 30 seconds. The upgrades reduce data wait time by 40 minutes versus the time it takes over Internet delivery.

“The Harris antenna upgrades ensure that Environment Canada obtains GOES-16 and future next-generation satellite data in the shortest time possible for life and property protection,” said Romy Olaisen, vice president of enterprise ground systems, Harris Environmental Solutions. “GOES-16 will generate four times the data at three times the resolution, and five times faster than older GOES satellites.”
